Everybody knows the Ford Model A. Fewer people know Duesenberg and Pierce-Arrow built one too. Donald Osborne brings three Model A's to the Garage, all on loan from the Audrain Automobile Museum in Newport, Rhode Island: a 1930 Pierce-Arrow Model A convertible, a 1930 Ford Model A Roadster and a 1923 Duesenberg Model A.
Same letter, three different meanings. Ford went back to "A" in 1927 to reinvent the company after the Model T. Duesenberg's Model A was sold as the Duesenberg Straight Eight, a road car from race car engineers, with an 88 hp straight eight and four-wheel hydraulic brakes. At Pierce-Arrow, "A" meant top of the line, above the B and the C, with those famous fender-mounted headlights and a body built in Buffalo during the Studebaker years.
Jay and Donald get into Edsel Ford's styling push, E.L. Cord's takeover of Duesenberg (Jay owns one of the very few Model X's that came after the A), and why a 1923 Duesenberg drives more like a Bentley 3 Litre than you'd expect.
Which Model A gained the most in the last five years? Make your pick before the reveal, then tell us in the comments. And let us know if you want to see the Model B's and Model C's next.
Thanks to Reliable Carriers for bringing these cars out from the Audrain Automobile Museum.
